Social Security runs two different disability benefits programs. Both are for people who can’t work because of bad health.
Your work history and financial situation determine which one of these you qualify for:
- Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI): You can receive these benefits when you have a substantial history of working and paying into the Social Security system. Your monthly checks are calculated in part based on your income when you were working. SSDI also qualifies you for Medicare coverage.
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI): You don’t need a work history for SSI, but you do need to show you have limited income and financial resources. Your monthly checks are a standard amount set by the government, and may vary depending on your and your household’s financial resources. With SSI, you qualify for Medicaid health coverage.
